Running Pace Calculator

Enter any two of distance, time and pace and this calculator works out the third, so you can plan a race target or check what a training run actually averaged.

Fill in the fields above and select Calculate to see your result and the full working.

Formula used

Pace = total time ÷ distance; time = pace × distance; distance = time ÷ pace

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose whether you want pace, finish time or distance.
  2. Fill in the two values you know — leave the others at zero.
  3. Times are entered as hours, minutes and seconds; pace as minutes and seconds per kilometre or mile.

Example calculation

A 10 km run in 50 minutes:

50 minutes = 3,000 seconds

3,000 ÷ 10 = 300 seconds per kilometre

That is a 5:00 min/km pace, or 12 km/h.

What does this result mean?

Pace is the inverse of speed and is the unit runners actually think in. A useful planning rule: race pace for a distance you have not trained for is rarely faster than your comfortable long-run pace minus about 45 seconds per kilometre. Use this tool to convert a goal time into the pace you need to hold, then check whether that pace is realistic in training.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply your min/km pace by 1.609. A 5:00 min/km pace is about 8:03 per mile.
What pace do I need for a sub-4-hour marathon?
About 5:41 per kilometre (9:09 per mile) held for the full 42.195 km.
Should I include walking breaks?
Yes, if you want average pace for the whole session. Enter total elapsed time rather than moving time.
